Dune

The 19th Noorderlicht International Photofestival Terra Cognita is a photography exhibition about the relation between man and nature. How do we experience nature, and what is its value for us? Our romantic longing for pure nature is diametrically opposed to the practical desire to control the world and cultivate it. Terra Cognita looks at nature far away and close by, as a dream and as reality – nature in our genes, and in our minds. Work by 115 photographers from 36 countries has been selected for this Festival.

Two works by Misha de Ridder ‘Dune‘ and ‘Ivguvuovdi‘ are on show at the main festival location Museum Belvédère.

Book Launch and Artist Talk for DUNE in Printed Matter, NY

event,publication,talk — admin on October 17, 2011 at 9:44 pm

Printed Matter is pleased to announce a launch for DUNE by Dutch photographer Misha De Ridder, published by Layflat Press. Please join us Saturday, October 22nd, 5-7 PM, for a reception and discussion with the artist. Printed Matter is located at 195 Tenth Avenue, New York, between 21st and 22nd street.

Starting at 6 PM, de Ridder will give a presentation about his practice, touching on his interest in connecting with the natural landscape through images, as well as considerations of publishing his photo works in book form. Joining de Ridder will be Diana Balmori who teaches at the Yale University School of Architecture, and is the principal of Balmori Associates, a landscape and urban design firm in New York. She will speak about de Ridder’s work in terms of the un/natural landscape and modes of representation.

DUNE, a handsome saddle stitched tri-fold book, collects a series of images showing lush, natural scenes so estranged and mysterious they have a sense of the unreal. De Ridder’s precise and highly detailed photographs call to mind the barren and tormented nature of Dutch landscape paintings of the 17th century and Romantic Era, where light, color and atmosphere gather to suggest something both serene and foreboding.

De Ridder will also screen his recent film Asgard, 2011, shot in subarctic Norway, which consists of one single fixed unedited shot. The short film (about 8 min long) shows a forest on a mountain as a storm passes through. Bringing to mind the work of Peter Hutton, a “story” evolves as the fast moving clouds and dark shadows beneath them move across the landscape.

DUNE by Misha de Ridder is 24 pages, saddle stitched, softcover and measures 24.13 x 29.21 cm. The book is published by Lay Flat in an edition of 750 and retails for $35.00. It is available in the Printed Matter store front or online at www.printedmatter.org.
